Let's face it: our hair matters to us. We are attached to it, it helps identify us, it can be used as a security blanket and, when our hair is on point, we feel like we can run the world. So, why is it that, once we reach a certain point, do we just stick to the same old, same old vs. trying out the latest trends and styles? We spoke to Lorraine McAndrew, Creative Director at Sassoon Salon Toronto to give us some expert advice on how to get out of a hair rut and how to embrace a sexier, edgier look.
BeautyDesk: How do you know if you're in a hairstyle rut vs. just sticking with a "signature look"?
Loraine McAndrew: Signature looks are great but this may lead to people never exploring new styles. Changes don’t have to be drastic, like cutting your hair short, but haircuts can be modernized by making small updates which can have a big impact. This could be cutting a fringe, changing fringe length, or switching the hair part.
BD: When choosing a hairstyle, what should we keep in mind at any age?
LM: It’s important to factor in face shape, hair’s natural texture, and personal style. Short hair can definitely make women look more youthful, but I encourage keeping some length on top when choosing a style. This adds versatility and movement.
BD: Can women over 40 still wear hair trends? If so, which ones should they attempt and which should they stay away from?
LM: Absolutely! Tilda Swinton (54) and Charlize Theron (40) are two great examples. Their haircuts are sophisticated and youthful. While Tilda’s looks definitely have more of an edge, you don’t have to be edgy to wear hair trends. Classic looks can have finishing touches that are in line with what’s trendy at the moment without appearing overdone. I think it’s important that a person’s hair matches their personal style, otherwise they could feel uncomfortable with the look.
