Q: I know that the results of a filler or Botox may look really great immediately after it’s done but do I have to keep doing them? Will my skin look worse if I don’t keep up the injections? If I do keep doing them, how often do I have to do them to maintain the look?
Theresa Taylor, RN: Results from your treatment with Botox should last anywhere from three to four months. Dermal filler results will last between six to eighteen months, depending on the type of filler/product used. You will definitely not look worse after the effects of your procedure have worn off. In fact, the opposite is true. Treatments with dermal fillers have the added benefit of stimulating your own collagen production, which means your body is working to mimic it’s behaviour during your younger years. Many users will experience this by realizing that they may need less product(filler) and may go longer between treatments. Regular treatments with Botox can have the effect of reducing the strength and size of the muscle that is injected. This will provide long term anti-aging benefits which have all been well studied and documented. Often though, individuals will become accustomed to how they look after having a few treatments and may forget what they looked like before. When they look at “before” pictures of themselves, it will most likely prompt them to seek out maintenance treatments.
