Curly hair can have a life of its own, and while we at Beauty Desk are all for embracing your natural hair texture, we also understand that change is a good thing.
Working against nature to tame unruly, naturally curly hair after a wash is probably the most effort you can put into hair styling. Instead, try these four steps to make curly hair straight and smooth. Consider it your hair cheat sheet.
- It all starts in the shower. Curly hair is naturally drier than other hair types. A hydrating shampoo and conditioner will do wonders to prep your hair to be smoothed out. Frizzy hair is a curly haired girl’s reality so locking in as much moisture as you can will make the work that much easier.
Products we recommend: Matrix Oil Wonders Micro Oil Shampoo & Conditioner - This is where the cheating begins. Instead of grabbing a round brush and blow dryer to begin the process, instead, wear your hair curly for the day. Hear us out for a moment. Your curls will dry during the day, and, when you’re ready to begin the smoothing process, run a heat protecting spray or serum through your hair. - Next, start with the hair at the nape of your neck, and by going in small, one to two inch sections (clip the rest up and out of the way), brush through the section to remove any knots. Grab your flat iron and don’t heat any higher than 350 degrees as anything higher will do major damage. Smooth over the hair twice being careful not to hold the iron in one place for too long or you’ll end up causing more damage on those spots. If your ends are a bit frizzy, a great trick is to rotate your wrist towards the end of the section and curl the ends slightly to hide the dry ends! Continue this technique, moving forward towards the front of the hairline.
Products we recommend: Rowenta Professional Titanium Ceramic flat iron - Once all your hair is smoothed out and you’re happy with the look, add a shine serum or spray and work into the hair to smooth errant, flyaway hairs and create some texture. Your hair should stay smooth for as long as you can stand not to wash it. Each day try some dry shampoo to freshen up the style if you have oily hair, or a light hold texturizing spray to add volume.
