We’ve seen natural skincare evolve significantly over the last several years, and today a quick search of the #greenbeauty hashtag generates an overwhelming view of the latest and greatest in natural beauty products. We all know the skin is our body’s largest organ and what we put on us inevitably ends up in us, so why feed our skin a chemical cocktail when Mother Nature has made such beautifying ingredients available to us? We’re diving a little deeper into the world of botanicals to give you the goods on how to incorporate them into your beauty routine and sharing our top picks that deliver some serious flower power. Whether you are new to the world of botanicals or just need a little refresher, we’ve enlisted the help of April Gargiulo, the woman behind what has been hailed as “the face oil to end all face oils,” Vintner’s Daughter’s Active Botanical Serum to help us break it down.
Botany by definition is the science of plant life, originating as Herbalism, which identifies and utilizes plants for medicinal purposes. While botanicals are the latest buzzword, they go way back and have been used for hundreds of years as beauty treatments. Gargiulo describes an “active botanical” as the most nutrient dense whole botanical and points out that she formulates with botanicals “because they offer unparalleled activity and performance.”
While you may find embarking into the world of botanicals overwhelming, a good place to start is to pinpoint your skincare concerns and start doing a little research. A good quality product will be transparent in the ingredients they use and Gargiulo is quick to point out that when shopping for natural skincare products it is important to “understand the ingredients and how a product was actually produced.” While Gargiulo created Vintner’s Daughter to address her particular skin care needs (acne, discolouration, fine lines, tone, elasticity and general radiance), she explains that “by addressing these skin concerns at such a foundational level, our formula may be used on many skin types because many of the root causes are the same.”
While there is a myriad of beautifying botanicals out there, more than we could possibly list out for you here (get googling!), to jumpstart your intel, here are a few skin superheroes that are chock full of flower power that should be on your radar:
