Few people think about the provenance of their makeup past the obligatory enquiries of "is this cruelty free?" at the checkout counter, but for what it's worth, Canada has made some impressive contributions to the beauty game. As the Canada 150 celebrations approach, it's worth taking a moment to applaud all things homegrown, including empires built on lip colours and highlighters. Happily, there are far too many Canadian beauty brands and indie outfits out there to comprehensively fit into one post, but beauty enthusiasts can't help but have their favourites, and these are ours right now:
Canada is not a homogenous society, and this is something that makes us strong because it allows for culturally-informed innovation. Case in point: the Vasanti Cosmetics line, which was started by four women of colour and introduced many Canadians to the concept of kajal. Indian women–and, occasionally, men–have worn darker-than-the-night kajal, a combination of natural conditioners and soot, for centuries now. It provides the perfect smudge, is non-toxic and usually blends beautifully for effortless sultriness, and if any of your South Asian friends actually visit home now and then, they’ll reassure you that a humble stick of kajal is often miles ahead of the smudgy eyeliner we see on runways these days. Vasanti Cosmetics also makes lip colours and cheek palettes, of course, but their kajal sticks are always the first thing that comes to mind for anyone looking for a minimal smoky eye look.
