I was born with the fortunate (and unfortunate) luck of being born of Irish descent. Fortunate in that in means I know how to have a great time (“craic” as they would call it) and how to pour a wicked pint of Guinness. Unfortunate in that I have been blessed with naturally, abnormally pale skin and ridiculously dark hair. All. Over. My. Body. After 15 odd years of continuous battles with razors, hot wax and smelly creams I finally decided to take the plunge and to brave the world of laser hair removal.
Making my appointment to have six treatments done on my underarms and my bikini line. Oh, it’s only $100 more for a full Brazilian? Please, just shut up and take my money. So, there I was, signed up to have the laser taken to my underarms and, well, basically all of my lady parts and I was ecstatic. I had visions of a pain-free experience that would result in a beautifully smooth and hairless body in just 6-8 months. I couldn’t get under the gun fast enough.
So what was the experience like? Did I achieve my dreams of becoming a bald bikini wonder who hasn’t touched her underarms for the last year? Here are the truths and the myths of my laser hair removal experience
It hurts… a lot
Truth. It might be a coincidence that I picked the two spots on the body that hurt the most to wax, but let me tell you… a laser is no better. And it takes way longer than 30 seconds. Think of a very powerful elastic band snapping against your most sensitive bits over and over and over for anywhere from five to ten minutes. Worst part? The thicker your hair, the more it hurts. Oh joy.
It also smells
Truth. I never really deciphered if it was burning hair or burning flesh. Either way, it smells a lot like burning something. And not in a “mmm, blown out birthday candles” kind of way.
