While we all want to maintain a youthful appearance, there are just some things that you (or your friends) might be doing that are most certainly aging you beyond your years. We narrowed it down to five of the biggest things that make you look older. If these aren’t your beauty sins, be sure to share them (ever so kindly) with your friends that may need help!
1. Contouring
This makeup trend is getting a lot of social media buzz and not in the good way. Put down the makeup brushes and step away from the product. Try a sheer BB Cream or tinted moisturizer instead. We are fans of Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream and Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer.
2. Eating sweets
Sadly, it’s true. Through a process called glycation, the sugars in your daily muffin or afternoon coffee drink attach themselves to proteins in collagen and elastic, which can make skin look older. Skip the sweet treats and opt for a handful of berries to satisfy the craving.
3. Overdoing your lip liner
Leave the dark, overdone lip liner back in the 90’s where it belongs. Plus, tracing your lips outside your natural lip line means your lip colour will stray onto the outer edges of your lips, where fine lines are hiding. We are all for lip liner, just choose the right shade and colour within the lines.
4. Not enough sleep
A lack of shut eye can significantly age your skin. So stop the all-night Netflix marathons and get to bed. Experts suggest adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Stress from lack of sleep causes your body to pump out cortisol, which can cause inflammation and the degradation of collagen and that’s the stuff we need to make our skin bouncy and plump.
5. Eliminating fat from your diet
We are trained by the media to cut fat out of our diet and buy low-fat everything. Not only does it taste gross, as we age, the good, healthy fats help keep skin supple, boost brain health, keep the heart strong and increase lifespan. Things to include in your diet; extra virgin olive oil, almonds, avocado, and fatty fish like wild salmon.
